This weekend(already happened) sees, the National Car Museum in Turin re-open. Following the evolution of cars, so much a part of this motor city, through a display of some 150 examples. Plus drawings, prints, posters and models, many of which are available in the museum’s bookshop. One of the star attractions is a “Cisitalia” Model 202. The name Cisitalia is derived from “Consorzio Industriale Sportive Italia”, a business conglomerate founded in Turin in 1946.

“The Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile di Torino re-opens after a four-year restoration and extension, featuring a new name. The overall investment amounts to 33 million Euros, of which 22 million has been allocated to the building’s restoration and 11 million to the internal exhibition design. The Museum has got a face-lift, and above all it has changed its character and aim: not only a mere architectural renovation, but an intervention aimed at placing this revamped museum in a dynamic and sensational way, into the Italian cultural landscape. Its contemporary and futuristic look was created and designed by architect Cino Zucchi, and the innovative exhibition space bears the signature of Francois Confino, set designer, who has already fitted out the National Cinema Museum in Torino.”

    3. Questions from our readers

    Dear Sirs,

I am a 70yr old researching work that I have been associated with in the past, and was wondering if you could help.

In the early 1960’s whilst working for a Company called Microcell in Camberley, Surrey I had the task of making tooling for a Lotus racing car body shell out of Glass Fibre, at the time Stirling Moss was driving for you, whom I met when he visited the factory, at that time I also made Stirling Moss’s bath for his flat in London.

What I would like to know is, was this shell ever used on one of the racing cars, was it the first Glass Fibre shell that Lotus used or designed, and is there a photograph of it.

    Hope you can help.

    ——————————————————————-

    Hi Neil

My name is Allan.36. I own a mk1 lotus cortina 1965 Which was left to me by my father. It’s in need of restoration. My father died 6 years ago at the age of 52. In the 6 years he’s been gone I’ve purchased lots of parts for the car. but not a wood rim steering wheel. I own a mint leather LL rim from a mk 2 lotus with brand new horn press. Lol.

Do you know of any one, who wood! Have one hanging about lol.

    Allan.

    Answer

it’s not clear whether he wants a genuine original Lotus wheel, but if not, there are several suppliers of wood-rimmed wheels

    Thanks John D.

    4. Lotus: Design Decades: Inception 1948 -1959

    Introduction

This series has been created specifically by the A&R to explore how wider social and cultural events and design interacted. In particular it seeks to demonstrate the extent that Lotus designs influenced taste, fashion, identity and impacted on the world stage.

The additional purposes and opportunities are:

    1. Looking at realistic time frame show how the jigsaw and production/ income and competition success of Lotus varied

    2. Exploring the complex dynamics between design, society and manufacturing. Along the way we can analyse Colin Chapman as an entrepreneur manufacturer versus the engineer and motor sport strategist. [Team Owner]

    3. Not least the topic lends itself to exhibition where the many facets of the decade can be presented in context and interactively interpreted. This ought have considerable commercial opportunity for sponsorship

In future editions we will explore in turn the remaining decades of Colin Chapman and Lotus cars.

In this article we hope to capture some of the optimism, ambition, idealism, excitement scientific experimentation and growing consumerism of the era. In the process it is hoped that the material presented can be assembled for a future interactive exhibition. This ought to graphically and memorably illustrate the power and impact that gave Lotus such a lasting, enduring design code, methodology and mantra.

This article includes a timeline in order that the respect historical, cultural and technological influences and forces can be seen in their interactive context.

Of the series this must be the most important decade. Not least as it encompasses the birth of Lotus and that of Colin Chapman as an innovative British Industrial Designer. It also makes reference to WWII that became a battle of applied science. Chapman was perhaps the greatest exponent of applied science and the extrapolation of technologies along with being a developer of ideas and people.

This item in the series is not quite a “round” decade but it seemed like splitting hairs not to make it inclusive.

Science and Technology of World War II

WW II [1939-45] was conducted as much as economic and scientific as military campaign. There were technological races and issues of superior manufacturing, logistics and communications. These have to be understood as they would very much dictate the immediate post war period. The list is some of the more significant items
